What does "in the sand" or "in the greenbelt" mean? In Corrales, we nickname the eastern side of the village along the Rio Grande River which has very fertile ground "the greenbelt." If you are on the western side of the village where the elevation rises, you trade the lands fertility for gorgeous panoramic views. This is referred to as living "in the sand."

ABOUT CORRALES:
"The quaint little town of Corrales" as we like to call it. Corrales is absolutely charming. Along the Rio Grande River nestled mostly in the Cottonwood Forest, Corrales offers very plush, green landscapes. Corrales offers a community rich with agriculture, history and art with a STRONG sense of community. For example, every Tuesday evening in the summer we take our daughter to the park at the Corrales Library with our picnic blanket. Here the adults network and laugh together as the kids run their energy out with one another. Usually, this is to the backdrop of a performance in the small outdoor amphitheatre. Folk dancers, small town performers, school plays, and things of this nature are viewed. Everyone knows everybody else by first name. This tight sense of belonging is what is so attractive to the locals. Since it's past as a rural farming community, these values have still not been lost in time. We have paraphrased a brief synopsis of Corrales' rich history here for you:  

The earliest public records found on Corrales are from 1870. The village's history surely extends further than this, as it is located on the west bank of the Rio Grande, which was regularly traveled as the Santa Fe Trail. The 1870 census listed nine households owning 600 - 1200 acres each; all had one of four surnames: Gonzales, Montoya, Chavez, and Martin. Including these major landowners, Corrales had 141 total households with 687 residents. As time proceeded into the early 1900's, Corrales became known as a farming community successfully growing varieties of grapes (thus manufacturing wine), apples, celery, and chile. In 1903, a New Mexico House of Representatives member, Don Alejandro Sandoval, moved to the village and changed the name to Sandoval in honor of his father. For the next couple of years, the village became the county seat for Sandoval County. The village remained Sandoval until 1960, when many long-time residents insisted upon restoring it's original name. Ironically, and about this same timeframe, Corrales began to sprout a new direction away from it's agrarian roots. A new Corrales bridge had been completed in 1957, which allowed easier access into the little village. New residents who had come to the area had as much interest in building homes as in farming. Following Rio Rancho's lead, Corrales became officially incorporated in 1971. It's slow and steady growth continued until the late 1990's, when the Cottonwood Mall was built in northwest Albuquerque - close to Corrales. The village was now much closer to shopping and dining, which catalyzed a fast demand and sharp rising property values. Today, the village's population is around 10,000 and many area professionals, artists, executives, and young families call it home. In Corrales you will find ancient landmarks, gourmet restaurants, bed & breakfasts, farms with various crops, and sophisticated shops and galleries.
